FAQs

McGee KC Consulting is a boutique grant consulting firm that blends 30 years of social work practice with 15 years of nonprofit leadership. Unlike consultants who focus only on the “ask,” we use a practitioner’s lens to assess your entire program and provide strategic grant readiness and grant management support. We don’t just write for you; we partner with you to ensure your programs are sustainable, culturally responsive, and ready for growth.
-
We focus our energy on established, mission driven social service nonprofits. Our expertise is deepest with organizations serving the front lines of youth development, reentry services, domestic violence, mental and behavioral health, housing instability, and food insecurity. We speak the language of practitioners because that is exactly who we are, and we work closely with Kansas City, Missouri, Kansas City, Kansas, and regional nonprofits as well as organizations nationwide.
-
To ensure our partnership delivers the highest return on investment, we work with organizations that have been in existence for at least three years. At this stage, organizations typically have the operational history and data foundations required to compete for the mid‑ to large scale grants we specialize in. If you are a newer nonprofit, we may recommend readiness steps to help you prepare for future grant work.
-
We know that the “grant to grant” lifestyle is a leading cause of burnout in the nonprofit sector. Our goal is to move your organization from a cycle of “fire drills” to a proactive, year round grant calendar. By handling the heavy lifting of funder research, grant prospecting, and technical writing, we reclaim hours for your leadership team, allowing them to focus on their mission while we protect their operational wellness.
-
Beyond securing funding, you can expect a stronger internal infrastructure and more confident grant practice. We help you build a “Grant Vault” of reusable assets and implement simple, practitioner friendly data tracking. You gain more than just a check; you gain the systems, tools, and strategy to sustainably manage your grant growth over time.
-
We provide a full service ecosystem designed to build your grant capacity as a social service nonprofit:
Grant Prospect Funder Research & Vetting for mission aligned opportunities
Grant Proposal Writing (Foundation, State, & Federal) for nonprofits
Each service is tailored to your organization’s size, capacity, and readiness so we can meet you where you are.
-
Absolutely. Funder research and grant prospect research are the heartbeat of our strategy. We don’t just look for open calls; we vet opportunities to ensure they align with your mission, the population you serve, and your capacity. Our goal is to prevent “mission creep” and ensure that every application we submit together is a high probability investment of your time and resources.
-
To ensure the wellness of your staff and the highest quality of each submission, we require the following lead times: six weeks for foundation grants and 12 weeks for federal or state grants. These lead times allow us to stress test the program design and data together, ensuring that what we submit is polished, compliant, and impactful.
-
No. We strictly follow the ethical standards of the Grant Professionals Association (GPA). Working on commission or taking a percentage of the grant can create a conflict of interest and potentially damage your reputation with funders. We operate on a flat‑fee or retainer basis to ensure our goals are always aligned with your long term success.
-
In some cases, yes. Many funders are eager to support capacity building, which includes professionalizing your grant writing, grant management, and reporting systems. We can help you frame this request in your proposals so funders see our partnership as a way to safeguard their investment in your mission.
-
The first step is a simple Discovery Call. We’ll discuss your current goals, your challenges, and where you want to go with your grant strategy. If we believe we can truly add value to your mission, we’ll recommend a path forward that fits your needs and level of grant readiness.
